[Watch webinar recording] [Listen or download audio podcast] The theme of 2017 World No Tobacco Day could not have been better: Tobacco is a threat to development. The World Health Organization (WHO) too believes that this theme will demonstrate the threat the tobacco industry poses to the sustainable development of all countries, including the health and economic well-being of their citizens.
Governments of over 190 nations had committed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 at the UN General Assembly in September 2015. Over 180 countries have also ratified the global tobacco treaty (WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control or FCTC).
It is important to highlight the links between tobacco use and sustainable development. Governments should not only implement tobacco control effectively but also integrate tobacco control in broad range of health and development responses at all levels. According to the WHO, all countries benefit from successfully controlling the tobacco epidemic, above all by protecting their citizens from the harms of tobacco use and reducing its economic toll on national economies.
Join us on Friday, 19th May 2017, in a special webinar on this issue with noted experts.
