[Click here to watch Webinar recording] [Listen or download Podcast] In the lead up to the World Cancer Day 2019, let us review if we are on track to reduce cancer disease burden and prevent premature deaths? 193 countries had committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among which is to reduce disease and death burden due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer by one-third by 2030 (and 25% by 2025).
Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally (cardiovascular diseases or CVDs are the top killers globally). Estimated 9.6 million people died due to cancer in 2018. Tobacco use is the most important risk factor for cancer and is responsible for approximately 22% of cancer deaths. The annual economic cost of cancer is staggering, as in 2010 it was estimated to be US$ 1.16 trillion.
Two most common cancers according to the WHO are lung cancer (2.09 million cases and 1.76 million deaths in 2018) and breast cancer (2.09 million cases and 627,000 deaths in 2018).
In World Cancer Day Webinar, join our panel of experts to know if we are on track to reduce cancer disease burden and what more can be done to accelerate progress towards averting premature deaths due to cancers globally.
This #WorldCancerDay Webinar is humbly dedicated to late Dr Veena Sharma, a researcher who worked in India's premier research institute (Central Drug Research Institute - CDRI), and carried out studies on some aspects of chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis in experimental Leishmaniasis, that resulted in development of new screening technique and several compound were screened for therapeutic activities. She was also a senior noted educationist who served as a distinguished teacher as well as Principal and Vice-Principal of several schools and colleges, and spearheaded campaign against one of the major risk factors for cancers: tobacco. She bravely fought against cancer.
Thanks
