Gender stereotypes plaguing the pandemic response

As per a recent news, a senior bureaucrat in Lucknow said, "The increase in female infection (of COVID-19) ratio is a clear indication that women are going out in the market and not following the precautions [for COVID-19 prevention]". This statement is not only devoid of any scientific evidence but also reeks of a deep-rooted patriarchal mindset. It also assumes as if men are 'following precautions'.
If we look at the data cited in the same news, 70.49% males and 29.51%
females tested positive for coronavirus (perhaps in July) as compared to
May 2020 when 74.6% males and 25.4% females had tested positive) in
Uttar Pradesh state of India.

Where are the men in family planning? Is it the business of women alone?
In
many parts of the world, including India, family planning is largely
viewed as a women’s issue and family planning programming is primarily
focused on women. In fact, out of the 14 choices
listed as methods of contraception, only 2 - condoms and vasectomy -
require men's direct participation for use and are, what we call, male
family planning methods. The rest are for female use.
For a better world, our lifestyle must be based on as less resources as possible
Medha Patkar launches youth led Towards A Better World campaign
[हिंदी] [click here to see the recording] Senior activist Medha Patkar launched a youth led, Towards A Better World campaign, in an online session where several youth leaders of Fridays For Future (a global movement led by Greta Thunberg) and other youth activists took part. We must change our life, lifestyle and sources of livelihood for a sustainable and just development, said Medha Patkar. "People should commit to at least one thing they will do to make this world a better place" appealed Dr Sandeep Pandey, Magsaysay Awardee and Vice President of Socialist Party (India). Dr Pandey is also a key inspiration that has motivated the young people to step forward and launch this campaign.
A vaccine for COVID-19: So near and yet so far
With the numbers of those infected with COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) escalating everyday globally we are indeed wading through turbulent waters with no end at sight. Scientists around the world are literally burning the midnight oil, searching frantically for a treatment to rid the world of this pandemic. It is a race between humans and the virus. And although it is too early to predict anything, their efforts for developing a vaccine have met with some initial successes, with 5 candidate vaccines having entered phase-3 of their clinical trials. And as we wait with bated breath for the magic vaccine, a historic moment has already set in with the large scale manufacturing of some of these vaccines already begun, including in India.

Beyond tokenism: Accelerating rights of women and girls in a post-COVID era
I am tempted to share this very recent photograph of a newly done up mural in a very prominent area of my city barely a stone-throw distance from the state parliament. It is a clear depiction of what our patriarchal society wants its women to be-meek submissive, docile, their colourless faces devoid of any hope or desires. I fervently hope that it is not the sign of times to come.

How will India deliver COVID-19 vaccine for "public health use" by 15 August 2020?
The news gives us tremendous hope that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is aiming to introduce India's first indigenous vaccine against COVID-19 for "public health use" by 15 August 2020 (India's Independence Day). This could be a scientific breakthrough in the global fight against COVID-19. But a lot of questions remain unanswered regarding how we will deliver a safe and effective vaccine against COVID-19 in such a short time, given the reality that the enrolment for the phase-I clinical trial is yet to begin and the enrolment is to be done by 7 July 2020).
