When Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) develops, then the disease-causing bugs (virus, bacteria, parasites or fungi) change, because of which they no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat, more expensive to treat, thus increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. Drug-resistant infections are threatening not only human health but also animal health and food safety worldwide. The multi sectoral One Health approach, which recognises the interconnection between people, animals, plants and environment, is key to tackling AMR.

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW)
Celebrated annually, the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) aims to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. This year the theme of WAAW is: "Spread awareness, stop resistance | Antimicrobials: Handle with care"
That is why this Global Media Forum is being organised to help spread awareness and stop resistance, in lead up to World Antimicrobial Awareness Week.
Senior leaders from World Health Organization (WHO) HQ who have been spearheading the response to AMR as well as those from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, will be on the panel to interact with the media. People from global media community, including those from news wires, print, electronic, online, bloggers, social media influencers, freelancers, among others, all are welcome.
